So we arrived to NYC once more Sunday morning and headed downtown to play a show at the Highline park opening festival.
we played on a rooftop of a building - Abby Road style and had a great time
A video from this show will be posted soon.

Then we hooked up with our new publicist in NYC - Fiona Bloom (Check out TheBloomEffect.com) and went out to a nice party at the Hudson Hotel , where we met cool cats like Taylor Mcfferin and DJ Ge- Ology.

After that we went to a freestyle night at the sin sin , hosted by the very cool band - "Spoken Movement"

Last night we went to the Highline Ballroom and checked out The Roots JAM , inviting some very cool guests to the stage The Roots crew rocked the house until 3AM



Today we met the legendary producer Keith Shocklee who established one of the most important hip hop acts ever - Public Enemy
he is now leading his own new project with his brother called "Bomb Squad"
Next week we'll have a little Jam with him... we will see what comes out of it

So tomorrow we are heading back to Philly to join teams with our producer David Ivory and play a special show with Bunny Sigler and Pablo Batista at Puck in Doyelston PA.
This show will be all filmed in HD and we will upload a few videos from it soon

USA Canada Summer tour Kicking off!

we started our summer tour with an amazing show at Montreal Jazz Festival in Canada
Videos from that show will be posted very soon

From there we continued our journey to a summer camp in Mont Tremblant QC , which was one of the most beautiful places we ever been to , a lake on a mountain top
we spent the night there and woke up early morning to head out to Brandies University near Boston
after a long 10 hour drive we finally reached our destination , and we are now here at Brandies, chilling out for the weekend and getting ready to play a Saturday night show here for the cool kids of the summer program

we have a night drive to NYC where we will check in to our subleased apartment on the upper east side
and go straight up to play a show at the Highline park opening festival at 2:30PM Sunday

we are going to play a Beatles style rooftop show and it should be very cool

Israel's soldiers of sound

Joel "Rebel Son" Covington, lead singer of the hot Jerusalem band Coolooloosh, goes to bed from practice sessions at 4am and wakes early for work the next morning, all to put a bit of food on the table and make music, he says.

"We're mercenaries doing what we can to keep with the music," says Covington of the eclectic six-member musical group, all of whom work day jobs to maintain the band.



Covington, a Baltimore native and father of two, came to Israel almost a decade ago in what turned out to be a life-altering trip. The African-American musician was raised Jewish. He arrived in Israel a tourist, but quickly came to call it home.

"Life here makes you look at the world in a different perspective. So much of what happens here affects the whole world. It was a spring of inspiration that led me to stay," Covington tells ISRAEL21c. The decision to stay led him to Coolooloosh four years later.

Now, fresh off its first year of touring internationally and recording an album in the United States, the band is a rising star in a sea of tough competitors. With its hopping tunes that mix everything from Middle Eastern beats to Hasidic-like jigs to familiar hip-hop rhythms, the band is convinced it is "a dynamic force" ready to take on the world.

Currently, it rocks the nights away in Israeli concert venues with a six-piece band and Covington dishing out lyrics in English. Only recently did it begin to catch international attention.

"I can see they're a little crazy and great musicians," says Coolooloosh's US producer David Ivory in a home video made by the band, "...but in this business there are a lot of people making music, and these guys are serious."

Ivory, a Grammy-nominated producer known for his work with Erykah Badu and The Roots, invited Coolooloosh to Philadelphia in early 2008 to record its second album, Elements of Sound - a collection of songs that leap ahead of the group's first record, Coolooloosh.

"Everything is different [in the second album], but yet we are the same. Over the year's we've matured," explains Covington.

The group got together six years ago from some "very spontaneous jam sessions," says the band's bass guitarist, Ori Winokur. "Magic was in the air and we kept meeting to play totally improvised long jam sessions for over a year. We recorded them and started to craft tunes that came out of our sessions."

In these initial sessions Winokur was joined by Yogev Shitrit on drums, Sefi Zisling on trumpet, Arik Levy on saxophone and Yuval Gerstein on guitar.

That was 2003, before Winokur discovered Covington rapping at an open mic night in Jerusalem. Winokur was enthralled by Covington's lyrics and style, and surprised to find out he wasn't just a tourist passing through the city, but a Jerusalem resident.

Covington was invited to a jam session, "and again, magic was in the air," Winokur says. The group has been together ever since, recording its first album in a Jerusalem basement three stories below ground.

Global Rhythmmagazine calls Coolooloosh music a "melting pot of sound," which should come as no surprise given that the musical backgrounds of these diverse 20 and 30 year-olds covers everything from the classics, to jazz, rock, Middle Eastern, and hip-hop.

So far, the band's promise has carried it through Europe this past summer putting on shows from Bulgaria to the UK, and then through the United States for a brief tour.

The group believes its success so far has come from a self-described distinctiveness and "the ability to actually pull it off," the band writes on its MySpace page.

"I think that Coolooloosh has something fresh and new to offer the music world and that with a very strong live show it has enabled us to progress and tour worldwide, and always receive a very warm welcome. Our music appeals to people of many ages and origins," Winokur tells ISRAEL21c.

A theme the band takes to heart, is its view of itself as a bridge between cultures and as representatives of Israel abroad. Although the lyrics are in English, which strengthens the band's international appeal, Winokur says they are still inspired by life in Israel and deal with issues that are widespread throughout the world.

"We present ourselves as Israelis and as a band from Jerusalem everywhere we go and see it as our goal to show an international side of Israel, one that people around the globe can relate to - we are soldiers of music," he says.

Most Gen X-and-Y-ers would agree that hip-hop music has become a universal bridge between cultures, and who better to prove the point than a six-man crew from Jerusalem? Since 2003, the members of Coolooloosh (named after a local slang term that roughly translates as “Let it go!”) have been heating up the Israeli underground—and parts of Europe and the U.S.—with their rambunctious live blend of jazz, funk and jeep beats. The group is now poised to break out internationally with its second studio album, produced by David Ivory (known for his work with The Roots and Erykah Badu), who hooked up with the band through a mutual friend and brought them to Philadelphia to record. “We take inspiration from many musical styles,” explains guitarist and backing vocalist Yuval Gerstein, “and of course Middle Eastern and Jewish music traditions are in our roots. We apply a lot of Middle Eastern musical concepts, where you might find a Hasidic melody on top of hip-hop drums, bass and a funky guitar. But each one of us comes from a very different musical background, so we all just like good music from all genres.” This melting pot of sound recently kept a packed house at Joe’s Pub in New York moving and grooving until well into the night—a memorable close to a brief U.S. tour that had brought Coolooloosh to New York’s Israel Non-Stop Festival and then down to Texas for the South By Southwest Music Conference. Behind the blaring horns of Arik Levy and Sefi Zisling and the cascading rhyme flow of MC Rebel Sun, the rhythm section of Gerstein, Ori Winokur (bass) and Yogev Shitrit (drums) delivers a funky punch that lingers. “There’s a very large hip-hop scene in Israel,” Gerstein says, citing the support network that has raised bands like Coolooloosh (and their friends Hadag Nahash, featured in this issue) to star status. “Jerusalem has a big underground hip-hop community that includes many different origins and ethnicities. We’re probably the first Israeli hip-hop band to travel so far independently, and we plan to keep it going.” Watch out for the band’s new album, coming any day now to a booming system near you.

COOLOOLOOSH – ELEMENTS OF SOUND

One of the most diverse bands I’ve heard in a while, Coolooloosh mix R'n'B with hip-hop, funk, rock, and even that traditional Middle Eastern sound. Their latest album, Elements of Sound, is a good demonstration of what they set out to do: to form one of the most unique and dynamic forces in the music world as we know it today.
It’s easy to tell that all six members are dedicated musicians. The lyrics are pure poetry and the guitar is light and funky, but can get gritty, dirty and distorted when it has to be. The bass is smooth and locks in with the drums creating a strong rhythm section for the rest of the band to work from. Their horns section adds style and definition to each song.

The album is well presented and diverse. The first track, titled “Elements of Sound”, is a fast paced funk/rock song which leads nicely into the calmer “Music Business”. Within the next few tracks, their Middle Eastern upbringing creeps in through the use of traditional instruments. By track seven the album becomes quite intense musically and lyrically. However there is a release in the tenth track, “Yeah Yeah Yeah”, a ballad to slow the whole musical journey down. “Until the Day” (track 11) then explodes into a political rage about the corruption seen throughout the world.

The songs fit together to make one long, quite intense, epic tune. Even though “Elements of Sound” has its heavy parts, it is still easy on the ears. It’s an album that I can listen to the whole way through and not get bored.

האיש הקטן הזה נקרא י.קוטנר והיה לנו הכבוד להתארח בתכנית שלו ב102fm לפני חדשיים בערך.
אני גדלתי עליו עוד מימי זהו זה! העליזים עם הסיבוב המסורתי של תקליט כשהמצלמה מתקרבת לפרצוף שלו.
הוא הוא האיש שהכיר לי את הביסטי בויז ואת פרינס ולימד אותי על הביטלס כשלא ידעתי את לוח הכפל עדיין. בכל מקרה הזמנים חלפו והאיש הזה היום גם מכיר את הלהקה שלי וזה כבר כבוד גדול וההזמנה לנגן באולפן שלו במשך שעתיים בצהרי היום היתה סוג של הגשמת חלום בשבילי. כולנו התרגשנו מהעניין. בדיוק אתמול ynet העלו את השיר Fall שביצענו שם באולפן ללא רבקה קנטר שמתארחת באלבום וגם ההקדשה אליה נחתכה בעריכה אבל למי שרוצה לראות את הביצוע הנה הוא בקישור הבא:

בעקבות פריצה לחשבון הג'ימייל הקודם של קולולוש נאלצנו לעבור לכתובת חדשה ולפתוח את הבלוג הזה.

ההופעה בחמישי האחרון במעבדה היתה תענוג, מלא אנרגיות והיה לנו הכבוד לארח את נגן הסיטאר יותם חיימוביץ'
שהרעיף עלינו מלא השראה ובעיקר על אריק שבזמן האחרון מתפתח לכיוונים הודיים חדשים ומעניינים. ניגנו שני שירים של קולולוש בביצועים מיוחדים עם הסיטאר. היה נפלא ואנחנו מקווים להעלות בקרוב את הקליפ מההופעה הזו.

a new musician friend we met in england and plays amazing Sitar.he spent a few years studying Indian music in India and now lives in Israel .his name is Yotam Haymovic and we played two of our original songs with him.
